Six Sins of Greenwashing

E-mail Print PDF

We have often discussed the problem of "Greenwash" on the Generator. How do you know when a company that claims to be "green" or "sustainable" or "organic" is really justified in making the claim and when are they doing it for the sake of selling a few more products.

In fact, one of the primary functions of the show is to debunk the myths surrounding each of the products and companies that we present on the show. The infamous "compost house" is one such example.

Now, US organisation, TerraChoice has released a paper called the Six Sins of Greenwashing , which details the specific techniques used to make products seem greener than they actually are. Because it pinpoints different methods used by unethical, or inconsiderate, companies we will refer to this on the generator as we discuss products.

The first step will be to work through the six sins, using specific examples of products that employ one of these greenwashing sins in their promotion.
